Fat Loss, Weight, Diets And You

People are obsessed with their weight. When most of us think of fat loss we imagine people with 60lbs or more to lose. We lose sight of the fact that we can be fat and fit or thin and unfit.
I know many of my Pilates clients who by conventional wisdom would be classed as well over weight or even fat. These people though can run like stags and have cardiovascular endurance that would put many of their thin friends to shame. They are also tremendously strong and quite flexible. I know most people who are well over weight are also untoned and flabby but that isn’t always the case.
I prefer to teach this type of person than the really skinny ones. The skinny type in my experience have poor core stability and little functional strength. This has often been caused by years of yo yo dieting and the accompanying muscle loss. No muscle no fat burning machine
So the next time you spot that porky person at a class or in the gym consider this, they may be fitter than you.

How To Lose Lbs

The eternal question that most of the Western world needs the answer to is how to lose lbs. Some want to lose lots and lots of lbs; some just a few. But how?
The answer is simple but not east: eat less and exercise more. Burn off more calories than you take in and your fat levels will drop, resulting in a reduction on the scales that govern all our lives. And everyone is convinced that will make them happy – if you can just fit into that size 2 dress, everything will be ok.
Oh wouldn’t it be nice if that was true! Trouble is, once the fat was gone, we’d tell ourselves next that we’d be happier if we had just a bit more money, or a different partner, or a villa in Spain. The problem’s not your weight. It’s your outlook. You are dissatisfied with your life and want a quick fix.
True, you’ll be healthier if you trim down a bit. Over 50% of the US is overweight at this stage, and levels of obesity are growing, especially in our children. That in itself is terrifying – WHY are we letting our kids get fat? They don’t do the shopping or make the rules on what gets eaten out of the fridge. We, the parents, are supposed to be in charge. And if the bad foods are not in the house, how can they eat them?
If they spend school holidays glued to a Nintendo, munching on crisps, sure – they’ll get fat. But again – who pays the electricity bill? We, the parents. Put your foot down, switch it off at the mains and send them out to play with Hank down the block. Outside. Preferably with a football. No they can’t take the X-box with them!
The point here is that they won’t overeat and underexercise if we don’t allow it. They’ll do as they are told. They’ll whine that they’ve Got Rights. Of course they do – the ones we say they can have! And if they have rights, then so have we. The right to parent them with patience, humour, and just a bit of discipline. Never did anyone any harm.

Is Fat Loss For Idiots Only For Idiots?

This diet is sensible, hunger-free and will work. I’d agree that it’s Idiot Proof, as they claim, especially if you do some exercise as well. And just think how much better you’ll look and feel!

Pain In Shoulder - and what not to do about it!

I have a lady in one of my classes (name withheld to protect the innocent) who spoke to me after class the other day regarding some pain in her shoulder she was experiencing when doing some of the Pilates exercises. When lifting the arm to the side she was getting a sharp stabbing type pain running from the shoulder and then down the arm.
I explained I was not medically trained and could not advise her on how to treat the problem and that before she came back to class she must go and see her doctor or a physiotherapist to get the problem diagnosed. My preference is always to get them to go and see a Physiotherapist as doctors in this country tend to just prescribe anti inflammatory drugs and rest.
I had an idea as to what the problem might be but as I’m not a medical professional I can only recommend exercises that may be beneficial after it has been properly diagnosed.
The following week I asked again if she had been to see anyone to get the problem checked out. Ohh no she says I’ve decided it will be OK and will just work through the pain! I explained that I couldn’t allow that and she must go and get it seen to before she could come back to class.
Now call me stupid but I’d have got it looked at straight away.
This lady isn’t short of money she just couldn’t be bothered to go and get it checked out! If her dog was sick I’ll bet she’d have rushed it off to the vet quick enough yet when her own body needed help she just decided to leave it.
Don’t make the same mistake. A minor injury can turn into a major problem if left untreated. Treat yourself like you would any other family member go and get it sorted.

How Fast To Lose Weight?

This question always makes me laugh. How fast should I lose weight. What they are really saying is I need to lose 60lb for my daughters wedding how can I lose it 2 weeks. Unless you amputate a couple of limbs sorry you can’t it’s just not possible.
The reality is it probably took you many years to pile of all that excess fat why should you think it won’t take a couple of years to get rid of it?
My wife Carol is a Personal Trainer and always recommends her clients lose between 1-2lbs a week as a realistic and safe fat loss guide. If you are a lot overweight this might rise to 3-4lbs a week. What’s wrong with that at 2lbs a week you would have lost over 100lbs in the year!
Not only would you have lost the fat but because the weight loss was slow you would also have made the many small lifestyle changes that mean you don’t just pile the weight back on.
It reminds me of the story about the tortoise and the hare. Yes the hare (fast weight loss) will start off ahead of the race but in the long run it is the tortoise (slow fat loss) who will win because it will be permanent (no rebounding back to your original weight).
I urge anyone on a fat loss quest to slow down, take it easy and enjoy the weight loss journey.
Don’t be the hare forget how fast to lose weight focus on slow and steady fat loss - you won’t regret it.

Welcome to my Blog

Since I left my day job (Network Manager) I spend almost as much time in front of the computer as I used to! Answering Email, writing articles and helping my wife with her own Blog.
It’s strange for me working from home and I’m sure Carol thinks the same. We get on very well but it is a significant change to the way we both work so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well.
I have to say leaving full time employment was the best thing I’ve ever done. I hadn’t realized how much stress I was under. It’s a bit like wearing a tight pair of shoes. You only realize how tight they were when you take them off! As a qualified Hypnotherapist you would have thought I would have noticed wouldn’t you.
Anyway enough rambling, enjoy whatever it is your doing and have a nice day.
